Representation & Tessa Perkins

Representation

Why do we need sterotypes?
we need sterotypes so we can place people into groups so its easier when we meet someone new to put them into a good or bad catagory.

The Problem
Sterotypes overlook the indervidual and what they are and what they are like. It can place people in negative groups which leads to racism and sexism. the qualitys are often exaggerated, which leads to carictures.

KEY TERM- Mediation... The way media represents us.

Tessa Perkins said "in many instances sterotypes are used pejoratively (negative conotations) by dominant groupes to describe subordinate groupes"

There are some points to say that steroypes are bead and could often be helpful such as :
There not always negative.
There not always minority groups.
They can be held about one's own group.
Sterotypes can change.
There not always false.

Leon Festinger created the theory of 'conotive dissonance'
He argued that we resist adjusting our attitudes unless faced with overwhelming evidence against it. Belief that we seek out confimation of our thaughts beliefs. this links with PLURALISM audience theory.
