My Theory Lessons Post1

In my first lesson with mr.smith, i learnt about the 5 codes: Action code, Enigma code, the semantic code, the cutural code and the symbolic code.

Action code- this applies to any action that implies a further narrative action. For example a Guslinger draws his gun on an adversary and we wonder what the resalution of this action will be.
Enigma code- this refers to any element in a story that is not explained, therfore exists as an enigma for the audience, raising questions that demand explaination.
The semantic code- Any element in a text that suggests a perticular, often additional meanings by way of conotation.
The cutural code- Any elements in a narrative that refers to a science or body of knowledge. in other words the cutural code thend to point to our shared knowledge about the way the world works.
The symbolic code- is all to do with binary opposition,( a person is only fat because another person is thin.) ect.

Levi Straus believed that the worls was split into a series of binary opposits. Essentially only one thing can be defined in relation to something that isnt. This links in with the symbolic code very well.

Mediation- The way we undersand a text (interprets)
Ideology- An ideology is an organised collection of ideas. An ideology can be thaught of as a comprehensive vision, as a way of looking at things a belief which helps explain the world around us.
