Gender

In most soap opras there and maily 5 type of men:

Buisness man/ playboy: Jack Branning

Geeky Small Boy: Tamwar Masood

Nice one: Billy Mitchel

The Thug: Phil Mitchel

The wise man: Patrick Truman

All forms of media uses sterotypes both male and female. some may be correct and some may be incorrect but non the less they are essential to all media aspects as the madjority have to appeal to a wide audience.
Theis is emphsised in Richard Dyer's theory on the matter of images.
" How we are seen determins how we are treated, how we treat others is based on how we see them. how we see them comes from representation."
I can apply this to some of the pictures above.
Busness man/ Playboy: in this image we see jack Branning. He is wearing a grey suit with a white shirt, this shows that hes keen for buisness, which could show formality. but his face is of the 'seductive' catogory. He has sort of pout on his face, eyes quite narrow and his head is tilted. This could show is playboy side.
Geeky Small Boy: In this image we see Tamwar masood. He is wearing a shirt and Green jumper, this colour could maybe show that he is jelious and wants to be popular, but what he is dreeses in is not helping him. also the fact he is wearing glasses. sterotypicaly a nerd would wear glasses. so when we aee them on Tamwar we automatically think he is a nerd.

The Male Glaze

The concept of the male glaze, this is the concept of dealing with how the audience veiws the people presented.
For feminists it can be thaught of in 3 ways:
How men look at women.
How women look at themselves.
How women look at other women.

Laura Mulvey coined the term 'the male glaze' in 1975. she believes that film audiences have to veiw characters from the perspective of a hetrosexual male.

The camera lingers on the curves of a female body, and events which occur to women are presented largley in the context of a man's reaction to these events. Relegates women to the status of objects. The female veiwer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.

The are some critisms to the Mulvey 'Glaze theory'

Representation & Tessa Perkins

Representation

Why do we need sterotypes?
we need sterotypes so we can place people into groups so its easier when we meet someone new to put them into a good or bad catagory.

The Problem
Sterotypes overlook the indervidual and what they are and what they are like. It can place people in negative groups which leads to racism and sexism. the qualitys are often exaggerated, which leads to carictures.

KEY TERM- Mediation... The way media represents us.

Tessa Perkins said "in many instances sterotypes are used pejoratively (negative conotations) by dominant groupes to describe subordinate groupes"

There are some points to say that steroypes are bead and could often be helpful such as :
There not always negative.
There not always minority groups.
They can be held about one's own group.
Sterotypes can change.
There not always false.

Leon Festinger created the theory of 'conotive dissonance'
He argued that we resist adjusting our attitudes unless faced with overwhelming evidence against it. Belief that we seek out confimation of our thaughts beliefs. this links with PLURALISM audience theory.

Camera Angles and Editing

Long Shot... When telling the audience where the film is set, lets you show all important infomation.

<
Medium Shot... most commonly used shot in cinima used to show character interaction and emotion.

Shot Reverse Shot... Used for diologue focus on or character talking. Position camera over the shoulder, makes you feel part of the conversation.

High angle shots- cannotes power of the object you are veiwing. Women have traditionaly been shot in this way yo make men look more powerful, making them look infirior.

Low angle shots- this is used to make a character look (appear) stronger.

Tracking shots- camera perpendicular to the action and follows the subject or action.

Panning shot- Swivels 180 degrees.

Tilt- mainly used on women.

Editing
The Basics
Continuity- the veiwer should not notice the cuts, and shots should follow, and floe together naturaly hence the sequence of shots should appear to be continous.
(HollyWood Editing)
Montage-Soviet
This style of editing has two functions. The highly political soievent style of the 1920's which sort to create a new meaning out of seeming unconnected shots. The audience are very awear of the cuts. 'Sergi Eisentiein'
Montage-Hollywood
in classical hollywood cinima a 'montage sequence' is a short segment in a film in which narrative infomation is presented in condenced fashion.
-when director condences lots of infor into a breif sentence. Eg someone trying on various outfits before a night out.
Transitions- a transistion is a term for how a editor moves form one shot to another. The use of innapropriate transitions can destroy the mood or pace of a scene.
Cross cutting/ Parralel editing- Editing that altinates shots of two or more lines of action occuring in different places, usualy simmultaniously.
Dissolve- A transition between two shots during which the 1st image gradually dissapears while the 2nd image gradually appears.

Lamb and Jackolope Film Clip

This is the video that matches with the post below :)

3 part narrative structure

Theory Lesson Part3
Begining- Equalibrium
Middle- Disequalibrium
End- New Equalibrium

A state of normality in the narrative. BEGINING
Somthing disrupts this normality and the protagonist/ hero must go on a quest to restore the normality. MIDDLE
The new normality is created. END

We then looked at a clip from youtube, named the happy lamb. we then applied what we learnt in this lesson and in the lesson before with the characters.

EQUA- The lambs dancing happy with lots of nice wool.

DIS- The lamb gets shaven therefore upset, Jackolope enters

NEW- Finds out the looing you wool isnt the end of the world and so dances along with the jackolope and everthing is okay in the end.

Fell in Love With a Girl

This is the script that matches the powerpoint that i posted earlier.

Black-Lauren

Theory Lesson post2

Vladimir Propp is a russian critic and theorist. He analised over 100 russian fairytales in the 1920's. he proposed that it was possible to classify the character and their actions into clearly defined roles and functions.
Character Roles:
The Hero (Seeks Something)
The Villan (Opposes the hero)
The Donor (Provides help for hero)
The Dispatcher (Sends the hero on his way)
The False Hero (Falsly assuming)
The Helper (Gives the hero support)
The Princess (reward for the hero, she needs protection)
The Farther (Gives away princess)

Mise En Scene
This is the french term for the analysis of what you see on screen. This does not include sound.
Lighting
Setting
Acting/Facial Expressions
Costume/Props
Camera Angles

After learning about Mise En Scene we were told that we had to wright an essay about the mise en scene of the film; The Royal Tenenboums, directed by Wez Anderson.

My Theory Lessons Post1

In my first lesson with mr.smith, i learnt about the 5 codes: Action code, Enigma code, the semantic code, the cutural code and the symbolic code.

Action code- this applies to any action that implies a further narrative action. For example a Guslinger draws his gun on an adversary and we wonder what the resalution of this action will be.
Enigma code- this refers to any element in a story that is not explained, therfore exists as an enigma for the audience, raising questions that demand explaination.
The semantic code- Any element in a text that suggests a perticular, often additional meanings by way of conotation.
The cutural code- Any elements in a narrative that refers to a science or body of knowledge. in other words the cutural code thend to point to our shared knowledge about the way the world works.
The symbolic code- is all to do with binary opposition,( a person is only fat because another person is thin.) ect.

Levi Straus believed that the worls was split into a series of binary opposits. Essentially only one thing can be defined in relation to something that isnt. This links in with the symbolic code very well.

Mediation- The way we undersand a text (interprets)
Ideology- An ideology is an organised collection of ideas. An ideology can be thaught of as a comprehensive vision, as a way of looking at things a belief which helps explain the world around us.
‘fell in love with a girl’ by the white stripes was shot frame by frame with each frame having the LEGO bricks rebuilt, sometimes in a complex manner to seem as if it were an actual shot, and then formed together to give the illusion of motion. The video mostly consists of red, white, and black color. This is because they dressed in these colors in day to day life.

The video won three MTV Video Music Awards in 2002: Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects, and Best Editing. It also received a nomination for Video of the Year.

‘Around the World’ is a song by the electronic music duo Daft Punk. It appeared on the duo's debut album, Homework and was released as a single the same year.

Michel Gundry’s music video for the song features robots walking around in a circle on a platform (which represents a vinyl record), tall athletes (as described by Gundry) wearing tracksuits with small prosthetic heads walking up and down stairs, women dressed like synchronized swimmers (described by Gundry as "disco girls") moving up and down another set of stairs, skeletons dancing in the center of the "record," and mummies dancing in time with the song's drum pattern.

This is meant to be a visual representation of the song; each element in the video represents a different instrument. According to Gundry’s notes, the androids represent the singing robot voice; the physicality and small-minded rapidity of the athletes symbolizes the ascending/descending bass guitar; the femininity of the disco girls represents the high-pitched keyboard; the "itchy" skeletons serve for the guitars; the mummies represent the drum machine.

Michel gondry like experementing with special effects. This is shown in this video very well. As this is a clip from youtube there isnt any infomation on why he made the clip, but none the less this is still a classic peice made by the legend of Michel gondry

This speech connects to the powerpoint below. I worked with Reece and Lauren. we decided to take a video of michel gondrys each and talk about them. i think this worked very well beause we were doing indipendant reaserch aswell as working in a group.

We chose, Ei because we thaught she was very photogenic, and suited the theme of our magazine very well. We made her look up and not straight at the camera beause it showed of her eyes off more than if we took the picture straight on. i think our photo was very effective and looks good on our magazine front cover.

magazine cover

As a introduction to the course we were asked to design and create a magazine front cover and a contents page. We were told that we needed to work in pairs of our choice: i chose Leonie Holder. We decided that we wanted a girl in our year to feature on our front cover. We took a range of photos at a range of different angles till we found one which we thaught was suitable for our magazine front cover. The brief stated that it had to be a mid-shot, and that is the one that we prefered. The brief also stated that it had to be suitable for a school audience, so we chose to create a magazine which was aimed at the students which are interested in performing arts. Our magazine is called "spotlight"! We included three peices of text one of which linked to our feature front cover. Eli wardle' i love streetdance its a seacret passion of mine'.

Our Video

As part of our piliminary exercise, we had to create a short film, including 15-18 differnt camera angles in the footage. Then we had to include short reverse shot, and some diologue between two people. I worked in a group with Hannah, Jack, Olivia, Vicky and Lauren. i belived we worked well as a group all the way through the ideas prosess the filming and the editing. We drew a story board of what we wanted out film to be like. We chose the film to be baced in the libary anf the conversation to be between Jack the person walking and Olivia our librarian. We used 18 differnt shots in our film which was the maxim we were aloud. After all the filming was done we uploaded iot onto the mac's and edited our clips on there to make it smooth and free flowing. If we had to do this again we would make sure that we would use the camera stand so our shots wernt so wobbley and the camera we used was more focused.
